CHAPTER SIXTEEN

SAVANNAH

When I returned to the hotel at five the next morning, after searching all the hospitals and morgues, the woman at the desk told me Casey had called and she was all right. My body practically gave out under the pressure of the night. Unable to do more than get to our room, I collapsed on the bed and fell into a deep, dreamless sleep.

I woke to a buzzing vibration next to my head.

I picked up the phone to see a text from Lori. Where are you?

It took me a moment to understand why she was asking the question. Had I just dreamed of our breakup? But then I realized, thanks to my phone, it was Monday. And it was ten in the morning. And we were supposed to meet the new client at ten.

Still in my Sunday jeans, I was nowhere near presentable for a client meeting. I texted Lori back, telling her I was running late and would be in before eleven. She sent an angry emoji, but I wasn't sure what I could do. The apartment and work were in separate parts of the city, and I had already used my spare outfit after the night of the party.

It took precisely forty-five minutes to get back to the Navy Yard, change, grab my things and get to work. I arrived, groggy, and popped a couple of pick-me-ups. It struck me then I hadn't taken any of those pills during my time with Casey. A whole weekend without them. I couldn't remember the last time that had happened. They were becoming a daily part of my routine—like brushing my teeth or washing my face. I would have to get rid of them some time. But not today. Not when I was late and I needed to be on. I popped another for good measure and pushed through the glass door of the main office building.

Lori caught me at the entrance to our office and dragged me inside, closing the door behind us. "What the hell, Sav? I know we're both going through something right now, but late for a meeting? That's not like you."

"I lost track of time," I said, setting my bag down next to my desk.

"You've lost track of your mind, apparently."

"You're perfectly capable of running a meeting, Lori. You could give them the numbers point of view, anyway." I blinked. Maybe not. "Are they still here?"

"Yes, but they want you. You're the superstar."

I wasn't feeling like a superstar. I was feeling more like dog turd. "Do we have coffee around this morning?"

"Sav." Lori stomped over to me and grabbed my shoulders. "What is going on with you? Are you… what's wrong with your eyes?"

"I didn't get any sleep last night," I said, stumbling backward, averting my gaze.

"I can cover for you, if you want. Tell them—"

"Absolutely not. Just get me some coffee. Please." I started to leave the room.

As I left, I thought I heard Lori say something about being a fool, but the good thing about exhaustion was I could easily ignore her.
